When we inquire with what we think of as the needs of storytelling imbedded in our search, we are actually attuning ourselves beforehand to that human richness so often missing in our journalism. When used properly, the novelist's eye opens our eyes and heads and hearts to the breadth of what we can and should be looking for in our reporting. It doesn't take us away from the truth, as some traditional journalists fear. It helps us better see and hear and touch and feel the truth before us."
