For decades, daily newspapers like the St. Petersburg Times and The Baltimore Sun encouraged writers to step away from the drone of the news cycle and write powerful stories about ordinary people. 

They served as an essential training ground for narrative nonfiction. Since 2005, when the blog that gave this magazine its name began, nearly 3,500 newspapers have shuttered. Sunday magazines and the narrative teams that sustained them were often among the first casualties.

Gangrey's next chapter begins in the wake of this loss. It is returning as a proponent of narrative nonfiction and will now also serve as its publisher.

We aim to recreate the experience of writing for a Sunday magazine. Each winter, spring, and fall, Gangrey will invite an established narrative nonfiction writer or editor to guest-edit an issue built around a universal theme, such as love, loss, death, or change.

Each issue will feature five 300-word stories about people who might otherwise not have made the news, in the vein of Brady Dennis' award-winning series. It will also include other forms of flash nonfiction such as micro-memoirs and personal essays.

Our mission is simple: to give budding writers the chance to learn from seasoned editors and produce the kind of work that helps repair the world, as all good stories do.
