Kelly Shotwell walked toward his orange 1987 Mustang at Kansas City International Raceway, his eyes hugging the scorching asphalt, his body language telling everything.
They were going to lose the car.
Air from burned tires choked the air, clouded the night, got in their eyes — but so did fear and anger. They'd pumped $25,000 into this car, loaded her up in a small town north of Cincinnati and drove 614 miles to race the '74 blue Camaro sitting next to them on the track.
