Paperless, With Lots Of Blood

On Southwest First Street, near the heart of town, there's a lemon-colored condo complex. Some of the condos are empty; their darkened windows have no curtains. From the road they stand out like rows of broken teeth.

Parts of this neighborhood are slumping with the economy. You can see it in the litter and rusting cars, hear it at night in the cries of the city cop sirens.

By this time last year, police had sped by this condo complex 37 times, checking on claims of theft, assault, burglary, robbery and homicide.

This year, the same area has already logged 46 such complaints.

The math is simple. Any street cop will tell you that, when gas prices soar and homes get foreclosed on and jobs get hard to find, crime percolates.

Maybe that accounts for the bloody scene that played out here on Monday night.
