Great little story from our pal Jon Gold, via his Facebook:
Had one of the most poignant experiences of my life last night.
Riding home from the Clippers game on the Metro, I pulled out one of my favorite book – Best American Sportswriting of 2002 by Glenn Stout – led off by one of my favorite features, Bill Plaschke's Her Blue Haven.
A young black dude asked me what I was reading. I told him, just a book about sportswriting, the best from 2002.
He says wow.
I told him I was a sportswriter.
He says wow.
I say, "What, you want to be a writer?"
He says yes and asks me how I got started.
I looked at the book, looked at him, looked at the book and handed it to him.
"This is how. Read this. Email me what you love about it. We'll get you started."
He began Santa Monica City College this fall. I can't wait to see where he goes from here.
