Reid Forgrave: Parkersburg, Ia. — The big linebacker sat quietly, his iPod blaring heavy metal, hands clasped, head down. He glared at the concrete floor.
Jordan Simon knew tonight would be something special. In a place where the high school is the heart of the town, and the football team the heart of the school, tonight wasn't just a game. Three months after so much had been taken away, the sight of their boys sprinting onto the field would give something back to this town. On this night, things finally would be the same as they used to be.
The coach took a deep breath. Jordan sat up straight. He tugged his iPod's ear buds from his ears.
"Wish I had some great words of wisdom to share with you tonight, fellas," Coach Ed Thomas said. "But I don't."
