Adam Bosch: WEST POINT — The leaders of this rock-bound military academy are always changing. Commandants come and go every few years. Old West Point superintendents retire, and new generals replace them.

The same goes for mules.

Two gigantic mules named Ranger III and Stryker were commissioned Thursday night as the official Army mascots. The ceremony was part of the weeklong celebration that preceded the annual Army-Navy game. Roughly 4,000 cadets cheered their new standard-bearers as they sauntered into Michie Stadium.

But the mood quickly shifted. Seconds after the mules were commissioned, cadets began to jeer them from the stands.
