The Garden

Dwyer: More than most sports arenas, Madison Square Garden is the palace of a feudal-state, and its lords fly the flag of entitlement. They pay no property taxes on most of a square block in Midtown Manhattan, thanks to a deal made 25 years ago. They get low-cost electricity, paid for by other utility customers. And the chairman of the fiefdom, James Dolan, was paid $15.8 million last year, when his arena was losing money on paper and his basketball team was losing two games out of every three on the court.
