At Patrick and Deann Farnan's home in Weston, Mo., friends and family know the basement door's always open. They can weave through the messy wood-paneled family room, past Deann's latest craft project — fuzzy fabric-covered koozies in red, gold and black — up the narrow stairs.



But no one uses the front door.



The bell doesn't even ring anymore.
