Epitaph

So another goodbye, looks like, this one in Albuquerque:

E.W. Scripps Company is seeking a buyer for The Albuquerque Tribune, and said it will close the city's afternoon newspaper if one cannot be found.

Scripps executives this morning informed The Trib's newsroom of the decision to retain private investment banking firm Broadwater & Associates to assist the Cincinnati-based company in its search for a qualified buyer. Employees were told Scripps will cease publishing The Trib if a buyer could not be found within a reasonable period of time.

But who knew it was such a special place? Check out our boy Hank (keep reading the comments; he's still rolling as of yesterday) and other Trib alumns waxing about that paper. Makes me wish I could rewind and do some time out west.

There's something special about places like that. Mine was the San Angelo Standard-Times. I covered Friday night football for the experience (and because I heard more people read Saturday's paper than Sunday's during football season). When we put it to bed, we'd walk down to Blane's Pub at the end of the block and drink Shiner until the sports editor -- Brett was his name -- started breaking bottles. I wonder if they still do that.
