Description: The Virginian-Pilot, a 180,000-circulation daily serving Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina, is seeking a reporter to help cover the beautiful and growing Outer Banks of North Carolina. The successful candidate will be expected to out-hustle print, radio and television competitors.

Essential Functions:

-- Writes compellingly, precisely and accurately for both the North Carolina section and the mainsheet, including the Hampton Roads cover and A1.

-- Meets deadlines.

-- Produces a regular mix of stories, including breaking news and features that give readers a taste of the unique nature of the Outer Banks.

-- Contributes to convergence strategy by posting online.

-- Collaborates with reporters and editors throughout the newspaper on stories and story brainstorming.

-- Travels for news coverage as required.

-- Writes in-depth explanatory and investigative articles that involves database reporting and Freedom of Information requests.

-- Is able to work independently, covering all of Dare County in a remote bureau.

-- Is a self-starter able to prioritize time and juggle multiple stories.

-- Communicates frequently with editors and occasionally attends meetings in the Virginia Beach and Norfolk offices.

Minimum Qualifications:

-- Track record of urgency in reporting and writing.

-- Proven record of beat development.

-- Precision and clarity in writing, with ability to present complicated information in a way that engages readers.

-- Proven ability to work well in a team setting.

-- Ability to locate and use data to inform stories.

-- Track record of uncompromising accuracy.

-- Ability to craft narrative stories.

-- Proven ability to meet deadline and manage time.

-- Ability to use data analysis tools such as Excel and Access to detect important patterns and trends in public records.

Education/Experience:

-- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

-- Four (4) years reporting experience at a daily newspaper
